In my humble opinion, however, the most important thing about a play or a movie or any type of storytelling driven by dialog is that it's beauty be--at least in part--guided by brevity. I completely agree that W. Shakespeare's writing is mostly inscrutable. As you said, it takes most people a long winded discussion to even figure out what five lines mean; I know I certainly fall into this category. However, I think his use of words is brilliant, sure a little over done, but it's like a really good MC rapping--it's transfixing. Sure, he could have used an editor. But that editor might have wiped out some of that amazing language, also. I will also concede this. You were once a man of the stage and the ferries, I can't even begin to comprehend how difficult it must have been to have to act this stuff out or watch the drama princes do it.
